Astoria Reiki

A typical Reiki session

If you've been thinking about having a Reiki treatment, you're probably wondering what to expect. During the treatment you remain fully clothed and lie flat on a padded massage table. The treatment involves the hands of the practicioner being placed on or above specific areas of the body, corresponding to key energy centers, or "chakras".

Part of a Reiki treatment.

A male and a female practitioner are available to conduct sessions

Before I begin the treatment, I will explain the hand positions to you, since most of your body or your field of energy will be touched. Hands are placed with respect not to violate an individual's body privacy.  Modifications can always be made to the traditional hand positions to respect any additional touch issues you may have. The receiver will often feel warmth, tingling, or both where the practitioner's hands are placed.  A practitioner's touch is always gentle, light, and usually motionless, except when changing hand positions; there is no massage or body manipulation.

In the United States, the preferred Traditional Reiki hand positions [attributed to Takata] are numbered 14. There are 7 on the front of the body and 7 on the back of the body. These positions are on the head, neck, chest, solar plexus, abdomen, and hips. There are also corresponding positions on the back. In addition, many times, additional positions on the front and back of the legs are used.

In all cases,  the breasts on women, and usually on men, are avoided, using what is called the "T" position on the front of the body with a hand on the sternum and one above it across the upper chest. Similarly, the groin is avoided, using a "V" shaped hand position which touches the hips or the torso above the "private" areas. If healing energy is requested to any of these traditionally private areas, it is done by holding the hands about 2" to 5" above the body, without direct touch to the area involved. The same approach is used to give energy to the lower spine and base of spine. Either a "V" of the hands near the area, or hands over the area without touch is used. This means that while certain "chakras" can receive direct touch, others, such as the important "root chakra" must get indirect or nearby touch and attention to the hips.

My job in a Reiki session is to help us set a positive intention, and get out of the way. As I like to say:“If there is healing happening, it’s the Universe first, you second, and me least of all.”

Dress comfortably

You remain FULLY clothed during the Reiki treatment & session. It is recommended that you wear simple, loose fitting clothes to aid relaxation. It is harder to relax when wearing tight clothing or belts. It is appreciated if you bring a clean pair of socks to change into, as shoes are always removed prior to treatment.

Creating a relaxing environment

The right environment is required to receive the full Reiki experience, to facilitate "letting go" into a meditative, relaxed state. A quiet, safe place is required.  Distractions such as ringing telephones will be eliminated; as will other interruptions.  We will ask you to silence or turn off your cell phones as well. Every effort is made to ensure a relaxing and spiritually enriching experience. You'll receive your Reiki treatment while reclining on a massage table in a softly lit environment. Meditative music is offered to enhance your relaxation.
